About Me

Hello!  My name is Cory May and I am a social studies teacher.  I am the social studies department chair at Columbia Central High School where I teach AP American and World History as well as World History, Government/Civics, and Economics.  I have been teaching at Columbia Central since 2013.  Also, it just so happens that Columbia Central is my alma mater (I graduated in 2006).  Besides my role as a teacher and department chair, I have also been a class adviser (for the class of 2017), the Quiz Bowl/Quiz Busters coach, the Robotics team coach, and have helped coach school-sponsored basketball and baseball camps.

In between my time at Columbia Central as a student and teacher, I attended Michigan State University where I received my undergraduate degree in History with a minor in Geography and an endorsement in Social Studies in 2011.  After I graduated from MSU, I honed my teaching skills during my full-year internship at Jackson High School where I taught World History and Economics.  While at Jackson High, I also helped coach the junior varsity baseball team as an assistant coach.  Following my internship year, I continued coaching baseball at Jackson High for two more seasons and began substitute teaching in the Jackson area, primarily with Jackson Public Schools and Columbia School District.  That spring semester (2013), I again taught at Jackson High School as a long-term substitute where I taught World History again, as well as American Government and Psychology for the first time.

Outside of the classroom, I live in Jackson, Michigan with my wife (Stephanie), our black Labrador retriever (Lucy), and our two cats (Oliver and Peter).  I have a brother (Cody), who is my identical twin, and a sister (Kierstynn), who graduated in 2017.  Fortunately, I was able to teacher her for a couple of years and even hand her diploma to her (pictured below).  I am a big sports fan, especially when it comes to Michigan State basketball and football.  I also enjoy playing these sports, along with baseball, in my free time.  Aside from sports, I love to watch movies and TV, play video games, and read books about military history.

Currently, I am a graduate student at Michigan State University where I am studying to obtain a Master of Arts in Educational with a concentration in Learning Technology.  I will complete this degree by August of 2017.  With this degree focused on Learning Technology, I hope to implement more technological based-learning within my classroom to provide my students with a more diverse and modern education that will help them to prepare for their lives after high school.
